Two Mirco Bergamasco penalties brought Italy to within six points of England in the closing stages and but for a late Jonny Wilkinson drop goal – the Azzurri nearly produced a shock.
England could only muster a solitary Mathew Tait try and failed to take advantage of Martin Castrogiovanni’s second-half sin-bin and with Ireland next up at Twickenham – few would bet on Johnson and Borthwick’s winning run continuing.
"We want to win all our games by as big a margin as we can,” said Borthwick.
"We did some fantastic stuff and made chances but we didn't take them, but credit to Italy for how they played they were very tough and resilient.
"Some of the aspects of the game we did very well in with Delon Armitage, Mark Cueto and Ugo Monye in the wide channels making some breaks, and Matt Mullan came on for his first cap and did well.
"There are a lot of positives for us to take from the game."
