Scotland legend praises Paterson
6 February 2010, 12:58 pm
By Sportsbeat
Scotland legend Gavin Hastings has praised the longevity and consistency of Chris Paterson who will earn his 99th international cap against France tomorrow.
Paterson will be appearing in his tenth RBS 6 Nations Championship and is already his country’s most capped player.

Paterson recently overtook Hastings as Scotland’s highest ever point's scorer and the former Lions captain believes that the Edinburgh utility back is a perfect role model.

“I have seen as much of Chris as any other player and he is one of those players that you describe as a consummate professional," said Hastings.

"It is not necessarily the fact he has been around for ten championships, but in the way he has conducted himself throughout his career, the fact that he is a tremendous role model for youngsters and a great asset to every team he has played for.

"His goal-kicking has set new standards and raised the bar and the consistency of his performances has been remarkable.

“That is what marks out exceptional players – that consistency of performance.

“I have always been a fan of Chris and it is very rare that you see him not have a good game, and that's credit to the way he conducts himself and prepares for games.

"I have played a lot of rugby at full-back and he is one of the most naturally talented players in Scotland and has been since day one.
“You don't expect him to drop a ball, he kicks the ball effortlessly out of hand and it flies 30 yards further than most others who kick a ball, which is a particularly important skill in the modern game.

“His points-scoring record speaks for itself and nearing 100 caps is testament to his dedication and consistency.

“Statistics don't lie in this instance. He has been a great servant to Scottish rugby."
