Heading into last year’s Six Nations campaign England had three representatives in the last eight with Leicester, Harlequins and Bath flying the flag.
But despite this year’s below-par showing Johnson insists European disappointments will be the last thing on the minds of his players.
“I don’t think the Heineken Cup disappointments for the English teams will make a huge impact on us because we are different teams,” said Johnson speaking at the RBS 6 Nations launch at the Hurlingham Club.
“Would we want our teams to all get through and be successful in Europe? Yes of course we would because it’s good for the players but they are different things.
“A few of them came in disappointed from the weekend but they get into international mode very quickly and are happy to get back together as a group and get on with it.
“Last year the French clubs didn’t have a particularly good time of it in Europe but if you look at the games last year they were very close and it was the same this year. Little things made a big difference.
“In an ideal world we’d have three or four teams there but we haven’t and our guys just need get on with it and get on with playing for England.”
