And despite defeat at Ulster last weekend ending Edinburgh’s hopes of qualification, Moffat was impressed with what he saw.

Moffat said: “We were pleased with the win, although we would have liked to have scored one or two tries.

“You cannot fault the team’s effort – we more than matched Stade physically and our decision making was good.

“We are disappointed overall with how the campaign panned out. We played fairly well and won all three of our home games, but in a tight Pool we could’ve gone through.

“The players will have learned from the experiences of the six games and we will take that on heading into the matches against Munster and Ospreys.”

Stade Francais ensured there would be four French sides in the last eight, with a losing bonus point enough to secure top spot in Pool Five.
