Jones won't make the same mistake twice

Wales wing Mark Jones has promised not to make the same mistake twice as he reluctantly waved the white flag this weekend ahead of next month's RBS 6 Nations.
The 30-year-old, who is suffering from a knee injury picked up on Scarlets duty in November, prematurely returned from an appendix operation last season.

Jones’ quickfire return in 2009 backfired as he struggled to find form and fitness and having been told 12 months on he won’t be ready to return to duty until late into February – the wing has ruled out a Six Nations return.

The 47-cap wing joins a host of stars injured on the sidelines for Warren Gatland as the Wales boss faces a selection crisis ahead of England at Twickenham on February 6.

“As far as Wales and the Six Nations are concerned, I have not even thought about it," said Jones, who featured against England in the Six Nations last season but was dropped later in the tournament.

“The Six Nations is out of the question. I made that mistake last year.

“I underwent an appendix operation in January 2008 and a month later, well ahead of the initial return date, I was playing against England in Cardiff.

“Although it was a great day and we won well, I was nowhere near fit. I didn’t do myself any justice and then sat out of the French game. I suppose my heart ruled my head.

“I thought I was fit and thought that I would be fine. But I was a long way away.”
