Hutton makes Edinburgh squad
26 August 2009, 2:49 pm
By Justin Goulding
Rory Hutton has been named in Edinburgh's 26-man squad for Friday's pre-season friendly match against Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park.
The 22-year-old stand-off could start because both Phil Godman (thigh) and David Blair (shoulder) are unavailable for the trip south, while club captain Simon Cross is expected to be out for a few months with a knee injury.

Head coach Rob Moffat welcomed the addition of former Hawick back Hutton to the squad and believes it will be an ideal chance for him to showcase his skills.

“It is a really good opportunity for Rory to show what he can do at this level,” said Moffat. “He is a National Academy player, but he has already got some experience and now he will be given a chance.”

Edinburgh’s first warm-up match ended in a 16-33 defeat last weekend against a strong Harlequins side at Myreside.

But Moffat believes the experience will stand his players in good stead ahead of the opening match of the Magners League season at Cardiff on Friday 4 September.

And he expects the game at Kingston Park to be another physically demanding test against quality English Premiership opposition.

He added: “The Harlequins game was a good test for us physically and this warm-up match at Newcastle will be exactly the same.

“This will be ideal preparation for us ahead of the opening game of the Magners League at Cardiff because they are also a very physical side.

“We will look to improve upon the areas of our game which were not up to scratch last week, although I thought there were a lot of positives to take from the Harlequins match.”

Club captain Cross, 28, came on as a replacement during the Quins match, but damaged his knee and is expected to miss the opening stages of the season.

Moffat said: “He has suffered a serious knee injury and we expect him to be out for some time.”

Meanwhile, full-back Chris Paterson will also miss the match on Tyneside; the Scotland internationalist has been rested after taking a knock to his hip against Harlequins.
