Rob Moffat's first game in charge of Edinburgh ended in defeat as Harlequins ran out 33-16 winners in their pre-season friendly at Myreside.
Moffat's youthful line-up were overpowered by an experienced Quins side, for whom Nick Easter scored two tries, both of which were bundled over from close range.
The England forward also set up a touchdown for Gonzalo Tiesi, with the visitors' other tries claimed by Sam Smith and George Robson.
For Edinburgh, Scotland star Chris Paterson kicked three penalties before going off with a minor hip injury. John Houston also scored a fine second-half try, which was converted by Greig Laidlaw.
