Munster sink Sharks
15 August 2009, 3:17 pm
By David Clark
Munster continued their pre-season preparations with a close-fought 19-17 win over Sale Sharks.
Jeremy Manning’s penalty from 38 metres with quarter of an hour remaining proved decisive as a young Munster side beat their English opponents at Musgrave Park in front of more than 6,000 spectators.

A try from former Ireland underage international Ian Nagle was converted by Manning and the New Zealand-born number 10 also landed three first half penalties, helping the hosts to a 16-7 half-time lead.

Scott MacLeod pulled a try back for Sale after the break and Charlie Hodgson converted before the England-capped fly-half landed a simple 63rd-minute drop goal, the Sharks looked set for victory.

However, Munster, who had a raft of newcomers and promising talents on from the start, refused to buckle.

Sale conceded the penalty just inside their half and Manning landed his fifth successful kick to put his side in front and they then defended stoutly to deny the English visitors.
