Wilkinson sets sights on French title

By Rob Barnett
Jonny Wilkinson believes Toulon should aim for the Top 14 title this season.
The southern French club beat Australian tourists the Brumbies 20-6 in a friendly at the Stade Mayol last night to clinch their third victory from three pre-season matches.

Toulon struggled to avoid relegation last season but have recruited heavily for the forthcoming campaign, Wilkinson being their marquee signing.

And the England fly-half, who scored 12 points from four penalties in his 62 minutes of action against the Brumbies, does not feel the team should settle for second best this term.

"The season is very much a positive outlook," he said on www.rctoulon.com. "We go into every game trying to win.

"It's difficult when people ask about the season without saying we want to finish first. There is no point saying I hope we finish third or fourth as it means we are actually choosing to lose games. We are not choosing to lose games.

"We will deal with whatever happens. We will learn from whatever happens but we will give everything we have got every game. It's do or die for that 80 minutes and then we go into the next one.

"Hopefully that attitude will allow us to get in the play-offs and win the title."

The 30-year-old, who was partnered by scrum-half Pierre Mignoni for the first time, kicked two penalties in each half last night.

He did not feature in last week's friendly win against Racing Metro but did play 40 minutes against Brive in Toulon's first pre-season outing a fortnight ago, kicking six points in a 9-3 victory.

Wilkinson will now link up with the England squad for a training camp next week as part of the preparation for November Test matches against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.

He hopes to play for Toulon in their opening Top 14 fixture, a home match against Stade Francais a week today.
