Logan laments lack of Scottish Lions
21 June 2009, 3:43 pm
By Chris Devine
Former Scotland star Kenny Logan was not surprised Scotland had no representatives in the Lions side for the first Test against South Africa.
Euan Murray may well have been on the bench had he not been injured but there was no place in the match-day 22 for either Nathan Hines, Mike Blair or Ross Ford.

All three will hope to push their claims for a place in the 22 for the second Test on Saturday - after the Lions lost the opener in Durban - during Tuesday's game against the Emerging Springboks, with Hines probably the most likely to receive a call-up.

The situation is in stark contrast to the victorious 1997 tour when Tom Smith was one of the heroes at prop, Alan Tait scored a try on the wing and Gregor Townsend was in such fine form at stand-off he forced Ian McGeechan to select crucial goalkicker Neil Jenkins at ful-back.

Rob Wainwright also played his way into the side for the third Test and Doddie Weir was a respected member of the party before having his tour cut short by injury.

Logan said: "The problem Scotland have is we have just two professional teams, Glasgow and Edinburgh. That means there is only a limited number of players to select from.

"Ireland, for example, have four provinces and now have half the Lions team. So I suppose in that respect it's not that surprising we're struggling for Lions players."
