Dallaglio highlights England 'experience'
14 May 2009, 2:16 pm
By Chris Devine
Lawrence Dallaglio has backed England to host a Rugby World Cup that would "exceed the players' wildest dreams".
England are bidding to host the 2015 tournament and unveiled their plans in a half-hour presentation to the International Rugby Board in Dublin.

The Rugby Football Union are competing against South Africa, Japan and Italy and believe their "low risk, high return" bid offers the best commercial opportunities to the IRB in the current financial climate.

Dallaglio was part of the Twickenham delegation in Dublin to argue the players’ case.

And he outlined to the IRB council a belief England's passion for sport and the "iconic" stadia being proposed for the event make it the ideal venue for the 2015 World Cup.

The RFU plan to use seven club football grounds, including Old Trafford, the Emirates Stadium and Anfield, plus Wembley and the Millennium Stadium.

The final would take place at Twickenham on October 17, 2015.

Dallaglio said: "I was fortunate enough to play at Wembley against Wales in 1999 and, even though we lost, it was just the most amazing rugby experience.

"I played at Anfield and as a fan of all sport it was a memorable experience. I captained England at Old Trafford (against New Zealand in 1997) and I can tell you the atmosphere in the Theatre of Dreams was not only special but very different to anything I had experienced in rugby.

"Having played in stadiums all over the world - in South Africa, in Australia and in New Zealand there are wonderful stadiums and wonderful atmospheres in every country.

"But the crowds are incredibly passionate on our own doorstep and I have found that everywhere I have been, in every rugby city and in every football city.

"This tournament would exceed the players' wildest dreams. It would be about creating a unique festival of rugby for all."

The IRB will make their decision on the host nation for both the 2015 and 2019 tournaments after a special council meeting on July 28.
