Gloucester hooker Olivier Azam has been banned for nine weeks by a Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel for eye 'gouging'.
The Frenchman is banned until September 17 following the incident in the west country club’s EDF Energy Cup final defeat to Cardiff Blues.
Azam was cited for ‘making contact with the eyes or eye area’ of Blues’ Jamie Roberts during the Welsh region’s 50-12 triumph on April 18.
The citing was initially dismissed last month after it was ruled to have been submitted too late, but a subsequent RFU review decided the forward should be held to account.
And at a hearing in Coventry this evening, a panel consisting of chairman Antony Davies, John Brennan and Bob Taylor opted to issue the punishment.
However, as the Cherry and Whites’ season is effectively over after they failed to make the Guinness Premiership play-offs, it will have little immediate impact on the France international.
