Godman has traditionally been viewed as a running No. 10 and when Hadden was looking for control and security in the playmaker's role he opted for the steady boot of Dan Parks.

But Godman forced his way into the Scotland side last July and has become a fixture at stand-off since then.

This season he has displayed much more confidence with his kicking than previously seen, even though arguably rugby's finest boot has moved to his club Edinburgh.

The former Newcastle man said: “It is pleasing and I’m happy with the way I’m striking the ball, especially when there has been quite a bit of wind.

“I obviously kicked last year, but with Chris Paterson coming back I haven’t as much this year because he is the best kicker in the world.

“It is a job I feel I can do and I got a bit of confidence from it last year. I feel it could become a real strength in my game. If I’m asked to do a job then I would like to do it to the best of my abilities.”
