Premiership chiefs expect record crowds
26 December 2008, 1:10 pm
By Catherine Goble
Harlequins and Leicester will become Guinness Premiership record-breakers tomorrow, with Tigers centre Aaron Mauger predicting: "It should be a cracker."
A 50,000 crowd could be part of a bumper Premiership weekend, with a combined audience of more than 100,000 expected to watch games at Twickenham, Bath, Bristol, Watford and Newcastle - plus today's Edgeley Park clash between Sale Sharks and Wasps.

Quins' Twickenham audience will be the biggest for a single match in the Premiership's regular season, smashing the previous best of 23,709 when London Irish hosted Wasps earlier this year.

Premier Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty said: "Harlequins' sell-out match at Twickenham is a huge success.

"It will be a great way for the league to finish what has been a very good year for us.

"Despite the tough times, we had more than 70,000 fans attend matches last weekend, and it looks as though we will have more than 100,000 fans coming to our round of matches this weekend."

Quins, who should clinch a Heineken Cup quarter-final place next month, could have their work cut out denying Leicester an away win.

The last 11 games in all competitions between the clubs went Leicester's way, including a 27-14 verdict at Welford Road last month.

Mauger said: "Harlequins have been playing some good rugby. It's going to be a big battle, but we have enough guys who know how to get up for big games, so it should be a cracker."

Former New Zealand star Mauger has scored three tries in the last four matches - but he is keen to play down a rich vein of form.

"I don't really judge myself on scoring tries," he added. "I try to judge myself on what I do during the game, and tries are just a bonus. I have been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

"It is good work from the guys around me and that hard work which opens things up."
