Paterson injury adds to Edinburgh woe

Edinburgh failed to cope with the absence of Scotland star Chris Paterson as they lost 13-9 to Ulster in the Celtic League.

Paterson was ruled out of the trip to Ulster to face former Scotland coach Matt Williams' side with an ankle problem.

The injury is only a minor concern to national coach Frank Hadden with the former Scotland captain set to be fit fr the Autumn internationals in November.

Jim Thompson – grandson of celebrated rugby commentator, Bill McLaren – made his first ever Celtic League start for Edinburgh in Belfast due to Paterson's absence but Ulster secured their first league win of the season..

David Blair kicked two penalties and Scotland man Phil Godman one to keep Edinburgh in it but it was not enough to deny the Irishmen a welcome victory.

Hugo Southwell partnered Nick De Luca in the centre in the absence of Ben Cairns while Jim Hamilton continued his fitness drive in the second row.
