Scotland Tests part of £100m income
15 September 2008, 2:49 pm
By Catherine Goble
Scotland's prestigious Test matches in November will play a significant part in games at Murrayfield being worth more than a predicted £100 million to the Scottish economy in the 2008-09 season.
As much as half that amount will be spent in the Edinburgh area, a study conducted by Napier University has suggested.

The arrival of superstars such as Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Schalk Burger and Bryan Habana for New Zealand and South Africa's Test matches against Scotland this autumn will play a huge part in the £100 million income.

Next year Scotland also play three matches at home in the RBS 6 Nations when they host Wales, Italy and Ireland in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Sevens, Edinburgh's minimum 12 matches in the Celtic League and European Cup and the Barcelona versus Hibs friendly football match - which was staged in August - will also contribute to the total.

Their projections for this season have not included the European Cup Final or rugby leagues Murrayfield magic weekend, which are sure to add to the cash bonanza.

Gordon McKie, the SRU's chief executive, said: "Were massively proud of our stadium and the contribution it makes to the economy of Edinburgh and Scotland.

"Our intention, working with partners from both the public and private sector, is to bring more world-class events to our stadium and extend the benefits for rugby and the wider community."
