Cairns to miss league opener

Scotland back Ben Cairns looks certain to miss Edinburgh's first Celtic League match of the season.

The elusive centre has been ruled out of action for a month after a scan revealed he had damaged the medial ligament in his left knee.

Cairns captained Edinburgh in the club’s opening pre-season friendly match against English champions Wasps, which his side won.

But last season’s Young Player of the Year was withdrawn from the action just 23 minutes into the game after damaging his knee in a collision.

Edinburgh physiotherapist TJ Johansson said: “We will be managing Ben’s injury carefully and we expected him to be sidelined for a number of weeks.”

Cairns is therefore sure to be absent for the Celtic League opener against Munster this Friday.
