Bath have re-signed utility back Robbie Kydd from Northampton on a one-year contract as cover for Butch James and Ryan Davis.
Springbok fly-half James is not expected back at the Recreation Ground until after the Tri-Nations, which concludes for South Africa on August 30.
And Davis will now be out for longer than previously thought due to suffering complications after undergoing knee surgery.
Kydd, who can play at fly-half, full-back or centre, spent a season at the Rec in 2003-04 when he played eight games.
Bath head coach Steve Meehan said: "Robbie's the sort of player whose attacking attitude and skills base suits what we are trying to achieve at Bath.
"He provides us with cover at 10 and in other backline positions, but I know he will set out to make a starting position his own."
