Murrayfield lands second honour
15 July 2008, 12:55 pm
By Rob Barnett
Murrayfield will stage two huge occasions in one month after rugby league's Magic Weekend was moved from Cardiff to Edinburgh for next year.
The home of Scottish rugby is already hosting the European Cup final - the showpiece game in club rugby - at the end of the May.

And now it will also stage the rugby league event, which sees a full round of Super League fixtures played over a single weekend, on May 2 and 3, 2009.

Edinburgh takes over on a two-year deal from Cardiff, which hosted the first two weekends in 2007 and 2008.

It means Edinburgh will host top-class rugby league for the first time since the 2002 Challenge Cup final when Wigan defeated rivals St Helens.

The SRU's chief executive Gordon McKie said: "We are thrilled to have secured another major sporting event for Murrayfield and Edinburgh, again underlining Scottish Rugby's commitment to hosting world class premium events at the stadium.

"We are very much looking forward to working in partnership with our key stakeholders to ensure that the Magic Weekend is a tremendous success both for Edinburgh and Scotland."

Murrayfield will also host three RBS 6 Nations matches earlier in 2009 with Wales, Ireland and Italy all visiting Scotland's capital city.
