New Lions coach Ian McGeechan is weighing up his options ahead of the tour to South Africa in 12 months' time.

Brian O'Driscoll, skipper in New Zealand four years ago, and Wales captain Ryan Jones appear to be the front-runners for the job, which was filled by Martin Johnson the last time the Lions toured South Africa in 1997.

Hastings, Lions captain during the 1993 trip to New Zealand – a party which was also coached by McGeechan – feels Scotland's drawn Test series in Argentina has put Blair's name in the frame.

The Edinburgh star took on the Scotland captaincy during the RBS 6 Nations after Jason White - another possible Lions captain - was concussed.

The former Scotland full-back said: Scotland's win in Argentina (in the second Test) was a very significant one for Scottish rugby. Mike Blair was outstanding and seems to revel in the role of captain.

"Being the first to captain Scotland to victory in a capped international is a great achievement to place on his CV and puts his hand up for the Lions."
