Sackey will start rehabilitation on a knee injury rather than head to Auckland with the England squad tonight, while Hipkiss misses out after suffering a fractured cheekbone during Tigers' Guinness Premiership final defeat against Wasps on Saturday.

Hipkiss, who was called into the squad last month instead of injured Wasps fly-half Danny Cipriani, is replaced by uncapped Wasps centre Dominic Waldouck.

Leicester's Tom Varndell takes over from Sackey, while the two vacancies in England Saxons' Churchill Cup squad their call-ups have created are filled by Leeds Carnegie wing Tom Biggs and Saracens centre Adam Powell.

Charlie Hodgson and Toby Flood, meanwhile, have both been declared fit for New Zealand after suffering facial injuries during yesterday's 17-14 victory over the Barbarians.

Hipkiss was forced off halfway through the final, which Wasps won 26-16 to secure their fourth Premiership title in six seasons.

Waldouck, his opposite number on Saturday, is one of England's brightest midfield prospects, although his chances in New Zealand could be restricted by the presence of fellow centres Mike Tindall and Mathew Tait.

Tour manager Rob Andrew said: "On behalf of the squad, I would like to wish Paul and Dan speedy recoveries from their injuries.

"Both Dominic and Tom are excellent players, and I look forward to working with them over the next three weeks."

Waldouck added: "Being asked to tour New Zealand is fantastic, and I'm very excited and honoured to have been selected.

"It will be my first senior tour, and to go to New Zealand will be a massive challenge, but it's a great opportunity to gather experience and learn from other players on the tour.”

Varndell said: "My thoughts are with Paul. It's a great honour to be called up with so many quality English wingers around in the Guinness Premiership.

"My last senior tour was to Australia in 2006, so I'm looking forward to having the opportunity of being part of the England squad again."

While Hipkiss and Sackey miss out, at least Hodgson and Flood have been given the all-clear.

Fly-half Hodgson needed 13 stitches in a cut beneath his right eye following a clash of heads with Barbarians flanker Jerry Collins, while Flood was on the receiving end of a tackle by South African number eight Pedrie Wannenburg.
