Llanelli Scarlets have asked the Welsh Rugby Union for permission to speak with Nigel Davies over the vacant director of rugby post at Stradey Park.
The Scarlets are in the market for a new boss after sacking Phil Davies last week and have targeted their former centre and assistant coach for a return to the club.
Nigel Davies, a member of the Wales coaching staff at the World Cup and caretaker head coach for the November defeat to South Africa, was appointed Welsh Rugby Union development manager four months ago.
"The Scarlets have approached us but no substantive detailed conversations have taken place," said WRU chief executive Roger Lewis.
