Godman relishing Contepomi clash
14 April 2008, 12:31 pm
By Tim Sanderson
Phil Godman admits Edinburgh will have to put the shackles on Felipe Contepomi when champions-elect Leinster visit Murrayfield on Friday.
Edinburgh are desperate to make amends for two sore defeats, their 20-0 home loss to Cardiff Blues and last week’s 23-14 disappointment against Glasgow Warriors.

But Leinster will provide the toughest possible opposition for the capital side’s final home game of the season, and Godman insists centre Contepomi must be stopped.

The 30-year-old Argentinian superstar was kept quiet when Edinburgh beat Leinster 29-10 in the European Cup in Edinburgh back in December, and stand-off Godman - who scored 15 points that day - is relishing the chance to face him again.

He said: “It should be a good match-up. I enjoy playing against Contepomi; we are slightly similar players.

“He is a class act and he can produce something out of nothing. When he is on form he is hard to stop.

“He is one of the best around, so we need to stop him playing on Friday night.

“Our defence was fantastic during the win against Leinster in the European Cup and we need to get back to that, especially after our last two performances.

“That was a brilliant display and we will need to replicate that because they have got some world-class players in their team. We will have to step up and put pressure on them.”

Contepomi and Leinster will be coming to Scotland looking to clinch the league title.

Edinburgh have not been able to sustain their challenge for a top-two finish, but Godman, 25, believes Andy Robinson’s side are not far from the required standard.

“We have got to look at a couple of things, but to be honest there is nothing major,” he said.

“We have to regroup this week and we’ve got to get the show back on the road.

“We’ve got our final home match this Friday and then we’ve got two tough away games. We want to finish this season as well as possible.”
