Mike Blair
Mike Blair
'All the squad contributed'

Obviously I am delighted with the result but having read the press the focus has been on how unimpressive England were - and to be honest they were not particularly great.
Although you have to say that Scotland put the pressure on England and forced them into errors and there has probably not been enough credit given to Scotland.

It was without doubt the best Scotland performance in the championship, they were under great pressure before the match and they obviously had to produce.

The way they played the crowd got right behind them and they created their own momentum. They were tenacious in defence and forced a ponderous England side back behind the gain line and conversely Simon Taylor had an inspired game and was always getting forward and providing a target for the rest of the players.

Scotland had quicker ball and there was a lot more continuity and I thought they played pretty well in difficult conditions.

It was always going to be a day where there was going to be a lot of kicking and I did not think Jonny Wilkinson kicked that well although England gave Scotland plenty of time to field the ball and decide what they were going to do.

Taylor had good game and I thought Mike Blair was excellent. He was basically everywhere and Taylor made a big difference to the back row while I thought Nathan Hines had one of his best games in a Scottish jersey, but to single out three players would be to detract from the performances of all the others in the squad.

All the squad contributed, including the substitutes. When Jason White came on and drove Paul Sackey back in the tackle - it lifted everybody.

Everyone expected the Scotland v Italy match to be the wooden spoon decider - and it still is but the interesting thing is whether Frank Hadden will make changes.

He had five forwards and two backs on the bench and it will be interesting to see if he has a complete front-row there again with Italy having a very good tight-five and set piece.

I thought Graeme Morrison was very solid at centre so whether Simon Webster is pushed out to the wing I don’t know and Dan Parks is not really an impact player from the bench although he did ok on Saturday. Hadden will have to decide if Phil Godman is the sort of player that could make an impact when coming on.
