Shane Horgan
'There will have to be a few changes to the line-up'
10 March 2008, 11:14 am
By Keith Wood
I thought we started relatively well. We were not doing anything major but we were kicking well in the corners and taking our chances, but maybe it changed at the point when Shane Horgan didn't score.
It just seemed to halt us in our tracks and in the 60 seconds after that there were two or three moves up the left by Wales and suddenly the impetus of the game had changed.

From then on in were definitely second best but we were really second best before that when we were hanging on. Wales could have scored - they had two or three opportunities including a five on one overlap at one stage and Stephen Jones kept the ball and made his only mistake of the game. Otherwise he was fantastic.

Wales were impressive without being fantastic. They played a good game and yet there were only four points in it at the end. I thought they were very nervous.

Brian O’Driscoll’s hamstring injury is a pretty big blow. I’m very disappointed for him. People have been writing him off but I have a feeling he may have been lingering with that injury because he’s not been his usual self in terms of defence and aggression. We haven’t really see him sprint for most of the season and I have a feeling the injury may have been the cause of his performances this year.

My disappointment in the game was that not a lot of guys seemed to offer a huge amount of leadership and when O’Driscoll went off there was none. It is a terrible thing but it might be a good thing and drag people out of their shells because we need people to be counted and to take control of the game.

There will have to be a few changes to the line-up. England have been deplorable this season. They played very well in beating France but the niggle with that is that France were the architects of their own downfall with their chopping and changing. Yet England showed a level of passion and pride they hadn’t shown in their previous matches and they didn’t show again on Saturday.

Twickenham has been a fruitful ground for Ireland over the last couple of years and we can definitely win there but we did look a little bit low after the weekend. We just need to see a contest - our forwards need to get into the game properly and so do the England forwards.

Whichever one gets on top really has that opportunity. It’s the last match and they will be playing for pride but also their futures.
